Module 2 Week 3 Discussion

Alignment of the Study

Plum (2008) capstone thesis delves at the relationship between participants of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and their impressions of the processes involved in developing meaningful encounters, establishing constructive discussion methods, and reaching collective decisions. Butin (2010) emphasized that the significance of alignment in all aspects of the capstone project is a major subject in scholarly writing. In finding, Plum generated perfect alignment of the statement of the problem, purpose of the study, and the research questions. Plum clearly identified what the problem was, background of the problem, what is currently and scientifically known about the problem, and what further research discoveries and solutions need to be identified in the study. The writing and research process becomes obvious and tightly focused when the four core pieces, the problem statement, the purpose statement, the research question(s), and the hypotheses, are appropriately aligned. Doctoral candidates can save unnecessary work and research by knowing that the entire dissertation derives from these four aspects. (Jones, 2013) Plum (2008) conveyed the purpose of the study and the research questions to solve the problem statement well because as a fellow educator and one who has had many experiments with IEP, I clearly understood the problem and could relate to it from previous experiences and research. These components were so clear that as I was reading the dissertation, I myself was trying to answer the research questions.
In regards to the theoretical framework of this study, Plum (2008) used Conversation Analysis and shared that Conversation Analysis is both a theory and a practice in and of itself. Conversation analysis is a method for evaluating social interactions. The purpose of this study is to find correlations between peculiarities discovered in human action patterns and generalities derived from shared organizational concerns and resources. (Conversation Analysis, 2019) Though a well known particular kind of theoretical framework has not been identified in this research study, readers can see clear validity to the Conversation Analysis theory has to the purpose of this study. The author even goes as far as stating statistics for the use of the Conversation Analysis to expound on his reasoning for using this theory/practice. The author used social interaction to collect data in which he shared how the data was collected (through recordings), when and the reasons for collecting the data through social interaction.

In the statement of the problem section of this dissertation the problem is clearly stated in the first sentence. Throughout the first paragraph the writer describes related research that has been done but points out the problem at hand still has been lacking in research. Plum (2008) states in the last sentence, “ It is from this place of potential for positive social change through an examination of the conduct and work accomplished by participants in this critical setting that the current study departs” (Plum, 2008). The writer does a great job pointing out where a change could greatly benefit society. Single (2010) states the focus statement of the dissertation must be concise and compelling in order to grab the attention of the readers and maintain their focus.
In the purpose of study section, the writer clearly defines their study as a qualitative study with a “focus on conversation analysis as a means of capturing the interactional data” (Plum, 2008). Plum (2008) also describes the “who” and “what” they will study as the, “participants in IEP meetings” and the way they “converse, co-create meaning, employ elements of interactional strategies to assert points, understand each other, identify with and orient to different membership categories relevant to the meeting, as well as highlighting evidence of power asymmetries in the meetings” (Plum, 2008). This section also uses words like “capture” and “analyze” to describe the intent of the writer in completing this research.
Research questions have been stated clearly and concisely in this section. These questions are shown to be realistic to answer and directly related to the problem or issue stated in the other sections prior. The following section describes the theoretical framework of the dissertation and how Plum (2008) plans to epistemologically approach the problem identified. Butin (2010) states a theoretical framework should work to help the writer be clear about the limitations of the study by clarifying why this study is looking at “one thing rather than another” (Butin, 2010).
Plum (2008) states in the first sentence the three possibilities of data collection as “copying broadcast of interactions, using existing recordings, or the creation of a researcher’s own recordings”. It is later stated the researcher utilized the last possibility and produced their own audio by utilizing a recording device during their research.
