Informal Statement

For the project, the selected organization is Walmart Inc., a multinational corporation that runs a chain of hypermarkets, grocery stores, and department stores across the world. One of its information systems is called Data Café. This information system will be evaluated to find out how it works, its significance, and any improvements that can be made to it.


Purpose of the Project

The objective of this project is to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the Data Café and come up with value-added recommendations so that Walmart Inc. can get more out of its information system.

Overview of Organization

The selected organization for the project is called Walmart Inc., a multinational retail corporation headquartered in the US. Its mission is, “saving people money so that they can live better” while its vision is, “be the destination for customers to save money, no matter how they want to shop” (Walmart, 2021). Walmart Inc. was established in 1962 by Sam Walton. Originally, it was a small discount store but has grown incredibly to become an organization that runs a chain of grocery stores, discount department stores, and hypermarkets. Currently, Walmart is the largest company by revenue in the globe. The main products provided by Walmart comprise of conventional household goods that can be found in supermarkets and groceries. The main services provided by Walmart include money services such as payment methods and in-store money services, and product services such as installation and cleaning services.

Overview of the Information System

An information system used by Walmart is called Data Café (Collaborative Analytics Facilities for Enterprise). This is an analytics hub located at the organization’s Arkansas headquarters. Walmart’s Data Café is currently the largest private cloud in the world and facilitates the processing of 2.5 petabytes of data per hour (Grover et al., 2018). This information system analyzes the data collected in all Walmart stores with the objective of leveraging the insights gained to provide better marketing, merchandising, pricing, and stocking in real-time. This information system allows the organization to better anticipate the desires and needs of its millions of clients. The information system plays a fundamental role in ensuring Walmart remains profitable by keeping up with the needs of customers.
