An I/O psychologist was hired to conduct team building with a specific department in the

organization. The human resources representative who hired the I/O psychologist

insinuated that there were significant personality conflicts between some of the

employees and the leader in that department. Prior to developing a plan for team

building, the I/O psychologist decided to conduct brief interviews with the leader and

each employee to get a better understanding of the issues. At the beginning of each

interview, the I/O psychologist assured the employee that the results of the interview

would be confidential and would not be shared with any other member of the

organization. The leader was also informed and agreed that the interviews would

remain confidential. A few days after the interviews took place, the leader became

paranoid and demanded that the I/O psychologist reveal who had “bad mouthed” her

during the interviews. The I/O psychologist reminded the leader of the confidentiality

agreement. The leader became upset and said she was going to terminate employees

who she suspected were “troublemakers” if the I/O psychologist did not share the

results of the interviews.
